Push through....

Mountaintops inspire us, but valleys mature us.
Are we willing to go through the resistance, the discomfort the uncomfortable to push though to the dream?
It's not just our dream, it's perfecting us to pass it onto the next generation and then the next, we better get it right....John Piper

another lesson learned today......

from these 2 “Egyptian hunting dogs”, as JB calls them.
I whistled for them and they gladly followed to join me for my daily walk.

I was apprehensive before even starting my walk.  The thick heavy clouds were down, so I didn’t have “much sight” ahead.  There was no phone signal (so how could I call for help in an emergency?)  Just yesterday an elli uprooted a mango tree close by, to get to the ripe ones at the top, and to top it all the locals had told me that they are around and quite “tipsy” from eating the fermented mangoes, so afraid of nothing! Mmmmm

I was adding another km today to my route so was a good 4 km from any habitation.  All was going well, I was doing all the right things, giving thanks for all the beauty etc etc, when I heard a faint rustle in the bush to the left of me, it slowly got louder and louder, small branches were breaking and the birds became quiet.  My heart started racing, my brain became numb (no sense!), my body paralyzed from fear.  I stood staring, waiting for the inevitable to come crashing through the bush, and out runs the little black dog, tail wagging, happy to find us.  I started laughing, then……. How pathetic I am!

But it’s another lesson I need to learn.  I preach it to the person I need to preach to the most.  I preach to me….

I was already nervous…. What informs us, forms us.
Fear paralyzes, making us unable to think clearly.  It plays with our minds, falsifying information and making them hugely exaggerated.
Fear prevented me from noticing the obvious signs that “all was well”.  The little brown dog was sitting at my feet wagging his tail, anticipating his friend to pop out the bushes.
Most of the time, fear has no grounding and its “nothing really!”

I find it’s a daily renewing of my mind….  It seems to dissipate fast! Like ice in this Gabon heat….
Removing the fear, replacing it with faith….
Removing despair and doubt, replacing it with delight and gratitude…
Removing skepticism and replacing it with trust.
He is able…

It's been a week of finding "different" plants..................

We took another "exploratory drive" today being Sunday........ We have so much to discover on 100 000 hectares of "bush" that is so alien to us....... Found another scrubby looking bush, I won't call it a tree, as doesn't seem to get too tall, covered in these fruits which just want to make you bite into them.  The birds had already been having a feast, so am sure its safe to munch on, but I had better wait for the ok!  The fruit reminds me so much of the "custard apple" Cherimoya Fruit  or the "ox heart"  Annon reticulate which we know..... What do you think......

Intoxicating Mango............

Wish we could share mango's with you all.... we have baskets of them!  The intoxicating smell and tantalising taste sensation, doesn't just draw the human's but the monkeys and elephants too, therefore we have to pick them green........wherever you go on this Ranch, even in places people don't dare tread, there are mango trees, the wonderful Gabon Forest Elephant spreads them everywhere.... and I'm so thankful!

Amazing what one finds whilst walking.......

So many things are missed whilst rushing past in a vehicle........
I walk this route daily and due to a shower of rain yesterday, look what I found.
The closest plant nursery is in Libreville, a 12 hour drive away, so guess what I dug up today to fill  empty spaces....... Anyone know what they are?

Granadilla like flower in the wild........

When JB has an opportunity to leave his office and visit one of the many different cattle camps on the ranch, I grab my camera and jump at the chance........  This morning whilst he was busy looking at the new calves, I wondered off to explore.
Everything is so different to the "Africa I know", plants, trees, birds, animals, even different parasites in the flowing rivers, people and of course, the language.  It's all very "alien" to me......
I came across this creeper on the ground, with a flower so similar (but smaller) to the ordinary granadilla.  They told me they eat the fruit, which is similar to a gooseberry.
I have a common granadilla growing on our fence and its flowering right now, so took a quick snap of the flower just after a shower of rain.....

These awful green grasshoppers are eating my vegetable seedlings as they pop out of the ground....

An interesting Sunday....

Definitely not a "normal" Sunday.... But, if you think about it, what is normal really?

We joined in with the farewell of the outgoing Ranch Director, Bruno, at a local village. It was also a welcome for us and we felt like royalty! Smart phones were snapping away to take pics of the "Le nouveau blanc".... The food was delicious but then the time came for the "real stuff" Palm Wine..... It definitely wasn't on the agenda but didn't want to lose face with all the many eyes staring in my direction, so held out my glass to a grubby 5 liter plastic container! I threw it back before I could realize my madness, and quickly downed a fanta to obliterate the bitter taste lingering. About 25 minutes later it hit me in a wave of tiredness BUT we had to now watch a game of football in the warm tropical sun!

Unfortunately, so they tell me, because I managed to start with this "opening" it will always be presented to me at functions! Groan... What have I done!

The dreadful Palm Wine, with an empty glass to prove it!
The local baker who makes amazing baguettes!
Pythons are a big problem in this area killing the calves so they have rewards for those for kill them. This guy makes phone cases from the skins ....
The amazing spread, thank goodness for rice wasn't to find of the cassava.
